Poll: SEO used by most e-commerce firms

The majority of US e-commerce organisations say they make use of search engine optimisation (SEO) as part of their online strategy, according to a new survey.

Conducted by Practical eCommerce last month, the poll found that 94 per cent of the 117 merchants surveyed said SEO was part of their online marketing efforts, with almost two-thirds suggesting that SEO was responsible for at least half of their website traffic.

Most respondents said they found ethical techniques such as internal linking and keyword-focused content to be the most effective, although the poll also indicated that many e-commerce firms were unable to see the difference between white hat and black hat SEO.

Seven in ten respondents said they saw paid links as an effective SEO strategy, while 53.9 per cent praised the effectiveness of keyword stuffing - both seen as black hat techniques.
